Emily Winfield Martin, a wonderful illustrator from Portland, Oregon, features fanciful forrest creatures and delicate, doll-like portraits.
Emily always had a singular imagination. She spent most of her childhood drawing, reading and day dreaming. In 2005, she started her cottage industry, The Black Apple, where she sells art and various stationary. She is a top seller on Etsy and is one of the first artists to have embraced the internet as a marketing tool. Etsy launched the same year she graduated from art school and she was able to shift from working at a video store to illustrating full time. She says, "Be brave misfits. Make your imaginary thing real."
She is the author and illustrator of a paper doll epic called "The Black Apple's Paper Doll Primer" and an illustrated novel for children, "Oddfellow's Orphanage".
"Oddfellow's Orphanage" follows a new orphan, Delia, as she explores her magical new home. Life at Oddfellows is anything but ordinary. Delia takes classes in Cryptozoology and Fairy Tale Studies, trips to the circus and a sea monster-sighting field trip with her new friends.
