Several months back, I was not in a good place. I felt lonely, isolated, and shiftless after graduating college with a bunch of empty promises and circles under my eyes from staring at jobs boards late into the night.
The Hubs knew that I'd always wanted a dog and seeing me putter sadly around the house, said that I could get one. I don't think he thought that I actually would.
I went down to Texas for an art show thingie and started browsing puppies. Guys, I don't know if you know this, but puppies are expensive. Like $500 bucks expensive. Who knew a furry friend cost an arm and a leg!
I'd pretty much given up hope until my mom found a listing for a puppy at a shelter in a nearby town. They called her Whinnie and she was a little different than what I had in mind, but I just had to meet her. My mom and I drove to the shelter the next day. When they brought her out, I swear to The Almighty Unicorn, it took everything in me not to cry. She was so tiny, just at five pounds. Her momma had abandoned her and the rest of the litter in the woods. She needed me and I needed her. So, I decided to adopt her.
I named her Indiana, after Indiana Jones, because he was actually named after the family dog. I watched a lot of George Lucas growing up. The adoption process was super easy and cost less than one hundred dollars (If you have any questions about adopting a shelter dog don't hesitate to ask). She was a little dirty, a little flea bitten, but over all I was very impressed with her care. She had a whole room to play with the other puppies, and had all of her vaccines.
I was a little worried that she would have some social issues since she came from a shelter, but she really doesn't. She's kinda shy and a little clingy, but I just see her as super cuddly. She's actually come out of her shell a lot.
When I brought her home and I told the Hubs that I was her momma and he was her daddy, he didn't really jive with that. He was like, "You didn't birth it so I'm not its daddy." So, I decided that Indie would know him as Not-Dad. And the nickname grudgingly stuck haha. He warmed up to her though. Now, I hear him cooing at her from the other room. I knew he'd come around.
She's one of the best decisions I've ever made because we make each other's lives better. It's give and take just like with any friendship. She needed me. I needed her. We needed each other.
Boom. Indie & Co. was born.
